Do the labels of the big Bordeaux names change? The details change a little, but nothing radical changes, except when the estates change hands.
Over 60 years or even longer, small scarcely perceptible individual changes have appeared, which only become noticeable when you compare the labels that are ten years apart.
We strive to maintain our family traditions, so why change the label on our bottles now?
1) Legislation forces us to display more and more official wording, which makes the main items of the label – those that trigger the purchaser’s decision to buy – difficult to pick out. We therefore need a back label to house all the regulatory and legal phrases, thus simplifying the main label.
2) With all the official wording gone, what was left?
A crest lost in the middle of a field of white: no visual identity, cold and impersonal. The only positive side was that it caught the light nicely. So the label needed significant change.
3) What guided the changes we made, was the desire to give the label meaning again, and add depth, warmth and humanity, to highlight the family dimension. So we kept the crest, the emblem of the name, and added the symbol of the estate that stands out most: the château. Our graphic designer Michelle added the touch of modernity, the smart elegance and strength along with the classical codes that absolutely must remain for great Bordeaux wines.
Our bottles, dressed in their new livery, will be on display from the 2005 vintage onwards. Some batches of 2004 may be honoured too…
